Are Gastroenteritis and Viral Food Poisoning the Same?
Viral gastroenteritis and food poisoning both involve stomach-related symptoms, but they are not the same thing. Confusion results from the development of related symptoms. Knowing which foods to avoid when you have stomach flu or food poisoning is essential.
Viral Gastroenteritis or Stomach Flu:
It is also referred to as stomach flu and is characterized by intestinal inflammation. As the name suggests, the main cause of the infection is a virus, which could be a rotavirus, an astrovirus, an enteric adenovirus, or a norovirus. It spreads by infected food or direct human touch.
Viral Food Poisoning:
It occurs as a result of infectious substances in food and drink, such as poisons, germs, or parasites. The primary cause of food poisoning is ingesting contaminated food or drink. Never is it brought on by human interaction.
Symptoms of Food Poisoning or Viral Stomach Flu:
The symptoms of food poisoning and viral gastroenteritis are remarkably similar. Viral gastroenteritis symptoms start to show up a few days after ingesting food and linger for one to three days. The symptoms of food poisoning appear quickly and are more severe than those of viral gastroenteritis. Below are some signs of gastroenteritis or viral food poisoning:
- Abdominal cramps
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhoea
- Fever and Fatigue
- Bloating
